Mowing Matters
Mowing your lawn at the correct height is really important when it comes to promoting healthy grass and a lush green lawn. Longer grass reduces weed growth and gives the lawn more leaf surface to produce food. Set your mower high and your lawn will love you for it.
Whatever type of mower you have, sharp mower blades mean a cleaner cut and a healthier lawn. Blunt mower blades can tear grass, resulting in rough edges that will leave your lawn open to disease.
Never cut more than one third of the length at a time. It may take a week or two of gradual cutting to get the lawn back where you want it to be, but slow and steady is the way forward. If you’ve let your lawn mowing slide a little - maybe you’ve been on holiday or maybe you just didn’t feel like pushing the mower - it can be tempting to cut off all that extra growth and get your lawn back to the height you like. This is a BIG mistake. Cut off too much and your lawn will suffer for it.
Make sure you always cut your lawn in a different direction each time.
Feed your lawn. Feeding helps it to stay greener for longer in summer and builds strength so fine grasses can withstand disease. Use a slow-release fertiliser for the best results – these are balanced to give an even feed and sustain your lawn for longer. A little fertiliser is better than a lot. If you’re using a nitrogen-rich lawn booster, make sure it’s watered in well or it can burn your lawn, resulting in bald patches.
For a perfect lawn, mow at least twice a week and remove the clippings (these attract earthworms and encourage fungal disease).
