There appears to be a growing popularity towards Northland Day anniversary judging by the number of people milling around our district last weekend. It is great to see we are a top location for all patriotic Kiwi’s to visit and with Waitangi Day to look forward to this weekend coming, I can only hope that the weather gods will be merciful.

Whatever the weather, I am sure that many barbeques will get stoked up and that a fair few cold ales will be knocked back in tribute to these celebrations.

And celebrations are on a-plenty. For those of you that have never visited the Waitangi Day festival at the Waitangi grounds in the Bay of Islands this is an opportunity not to be missed. It is a very well organised and colourful event that every New Zealand resident should see and experience at least once in a lifetime. As you can imagine, if the sun is shining you could not wish to be in more beautiful surroundings, they are of world-class, a must see for sure.

Then of course, there is the now infamous red line right here in Whangarei that without a doubt thousands will be following once again. Same direction, same location, with the only difference being, cricket instead of rugby. Yet again, Whangarei plays host to another world class sports event. Zimbabwe versus the Blackcaps on Cobham Oval. As stated on the official cricket site the Zimbabweans have been absent from the Test playing arena for a while, they have been active in the short form of the game. Players such as Brendan Taylor have the ability to take any bowling attack apart, so they won’t be pushovers. However, the BLACKCAPS will be on a mission to put these guys to the sword and the cricket promises to be riveting.

I can hear the champagne corks popping and the salmon and caviar sandwiches delicately nibbled on only then put down to make time for a polite clapping when one of the chappies plays an awfully good shot! I Say – Well Done Old Chap.

Happy Reading!
