Let There Be Light - Future Proofed Windows
A light, bright home with plenty of natural light is a must have these days, whether it be through a roof window or skylight, a Solatube or just your everyday windows. In this newsletter we look at different options to ensure you are maximising the use of natural light in your home, as well as other benefits of choosing the right products.
There are so many different, innovative window styles these days; there will definitely be one to suit your home. Depending on what you require from the windows will determine your choice. Let’s look at some of the styles available and see how they can work in your home.
Bi-folding doors and windows open right up, in a generous and unobstructed way, perfect for indoor/outdoor living. You can choose bi-folds that will open up and sit at a 90degree angle from the building, or upgrade to models that fold right back against the external wall.
Sliding windows are perfect for restricted spaces where protrusion beyond the building isn’t an option. Choose from vertical or horizontal sliders. The windows slide on purpose designed rollers for a smooth operation when opening and closing.
Stacker windows are an extension of sliding windows and have two panels that stack behind each other allowing extra window space to be opened up. Insect screens can be easily fitted into the windows, perfect for keeping the summer pests at bay.
Double hung windows, also known as vertical sliding windows, feature a pivot sash. The windows tilt to allow for easy cleaning inside and are another great option when space is restricted. Air flows through both the top and bottom providing excellent ventilation.
Box, Bay and Greenhouse are all windows that project from external walls. Their protrusion enables them to capture extra light and warmth and add a touch of character to a home. They all are effective in capturing views, and bringing sunlight into the room. Greenhouse windows have glass roofs and 90degree corners, they are very effective in kitchens, and box windows make a perfect window seat while adding more space to the room. All these windows come in a number of variables and options. Talk to your local Fairview or Elite manufacturer for more information.
Some of the most popular styles of window are Awning and Casement windows. Both window styles open outwards so careful design is required if the windows are going to be used close to decks or pathways. Awning windows are hinged at the top and provide good ventilation. They allow you to leave them partly open even when it’s raining without worrying about rain getting inside.
Casement windows are a popular choice with renovators as they have a traditional look and help recapture the look of an earlier era. Casement windows are hinged on the side. There are a range of stays and catches available with locking options for added security, they can also be colour matched which provides an attractive alternative to standard black.
